It's been thirty days, two hours, and seventeen minutes since Calder left Lily standing on the shores of Lake Superior. Not that she's counting. And when Calder does return, it's not quite the reunion Lily hoped for. Especially after she lets her father in on a huge secret: he, like Calder, is a merman. Obsessed with his new identity, Lily's dad monopolizes Calder's time as the two of them spend every day in the water, leaving Lily behind. Then dead bodies start washing ashore. Calder blames his mermaid sisters, but Lily fears her father has embraced the merman's natural need to kill. As the body count grows, everyone is pointing fingers. Lily doesn't know what to believe—only that whoever's responsible is sure to strike again. . . .

First Thoughts/ Storyline
Firstly, you guys should know that I adored Lies Beneath and fell in with these mermaids that Anne Brown had created, that were different than what I previously thought of, when I thought mermaid!  Lies Beneath completely brought me into its world, and had me wanting more! So when Deep Betrayal came out I had to read it.

Deep Betrayal is the sequel to Anne Brown Lies Beneath. It picks up 30 days after Lies Beneath. Lily hasn’t heard from Calder and she is now back in Minnesota, living with her best friend, preparing to graduate, having being forced away from Lake Superior. You would think she would be happy to be back home, to graduate with her friends and class, but she isn’t. Lily only has one thing on mind and that’s Calder. She wants to know why he hasn’t called her, or texted her, it’s like he has completely disappeared.

If you recall in Lies Beneath a lot happened.  Lily met Calder, who happened to be a mermaid, who had three sisters. They weren’t the kind and pretty mermaids that we all know and love. They were dangerous, and they killed humans and absorbed their energy; and if that didn’t make them treacherous enough they had a grudge against Lily’s family, and would stop at nothing to get their revenge.

Now, in Deep Betrayal Lily comes back to Lake Superior; and again she is in the center of a mystery. She has new things happening to her, she is constantly worried about her father who recently found out he was a Merman, oh and someone is murdering people.

My thoughts
You should know that Deep Betrayal is written from Lily’s Point of view, whereas Lies Beneath was told from Calder’s point of view. Initially I was a little worried about this change. I like when there’s alternating POV’s every chapter, but not one book in one POV and one in another. Plus With Calder’s POV we got to see life as a mermen and I loved that; but hearing lily’s voice was just as great. In Deep Betrayal we got to see more of lily’s feelings, and more character development for her and the secondary characters. I still will say I enjoyed Calder’s POV more!!

What I missed from this book are my killer sisters. I loved them, it’s like you wanted to hate them but you can’t hate someone for growing up a certain way, that’s all they knew. I still have hope that they can change, but if not I love them for being baddies too!!!

What I loved from the book was the history and the story of Marighdean Mara. It really interested me and had me actually wanting to read a book based on her story… May I can get a novella or a prequel story. I loved Anne writing also, she has a way of making you feel the characters emotion.

Overall, I LOVED Deep Betrayal!!! It gave me mystery, romance, and answered some questions that I previously had! The only major flaw with Deep Betrayal comes from the wait. Jan. 2014? Come on that’s so far away and Anne Greenwood Brown Likes to leave me at the first times. I mean the endings are never cliffhangers but just as bad. Brown is like a book teaser. She lets me found out something, then tells me I have to wait a year until I know the outcome. Ugh!!!!

With that being said Deep Betrayal is the perfect sequel to a stellar book debut, and sets you up perfectly for the third book. It’s both magical and horrifying at the same time.

  1. I haven't read anything from this author before but I think I might need to! Not only does this series sound good, but I'm a sucker for amazing cliffhangers or abrupt endings! If an author can leave me dying for the next book in a series for almost a year that's when I know I love a story! Great review :)

  2. I'll be honest and say I didn't like this one as much as the first. I flew through the first one. I loved Calder's POV. I wasn't so happy about Lily's POV. I found her rather wishy washy. And the story just did not grab me as I wish it would have. I read the first one in a few hours, this one took me a few days. I am interested to see where Brown takes the last one, tho. I am excited to read it. This is my first mermaid series,
